A field of 85 good-hearted golfers gathered Saturday to compete and raise $8,000 for Dollars for Scholars during a tournament at the CasaBlanca golf course in Mesquite.

In addition, the Mesquite Golf Getaway group raised $4,000 for the Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas.

“I work on this tournament for most of the year,” said tournament organizer Bob Keck, 67, who is also the former owner of Skinny Dugan’s pub in Las Vegas.

“We just get together to help the Dollars for Scholars along with the Cleveland Clinic. Everyone in the group is friends and they all look forward to this.”

Keck said participants came from several states including Nevada, Utah, California, Arizona and South Carolina.

The winning team of Kenny Lee, Nick Han, David Hwang and Justin Doh combined for a 58.

Darlene Montague, the site coordinator for the Division of Workforce & Economic Development for the College of Southern Nevada, lauded the event.

“There are so many students that would not be able to go on to school without help like this,” she said. “We were able to help more than 20 students and hope to exceed that number this year.”

Montague further explained that eligible students must be graduates of Virgin Valley or Moapa Valley high schools to be eligible for help from Dollars for Scholars.

Students can also be currently enrolled at a college.

A 14-year resident of Mesquite, Montague has been involved with the Dollars for Scholars program for five years.

She is also on the board of directors for the group.

Dollars for Scholars chapters help hometown students achieve their educational goals by raising scholarship funds, establishing endowments, providing assistance with college readiness and the financial aid process, and distributing scholarships each year.
