New Park A No-Play Area
Posting Date: 02-03-2009

By Morris Workman
The pristine soccer fields of the new Mesquite Regional Park might be the stuff of dreams for kids fantasizing about becoming the next Pele or David Beckham, but all they can do is dream, as youngsters are not permitted to use the field without express written permission and supervision from the city.

Looking out over the natural grass and artificial turf of the soccer fields at the new Regional Park in Mesquite, you can almost imagine hordes of children and young adults running all over the pitch, kicking soccer balls and laughing at the fun of playing outdoors on a perfect green surface.

When citizens grudgingly pay their annual property tax bills, or fork over money for sales taxes, it is this vision which helps salve the pain of giving money to a faceless government.

The notion of children at play in a city park is the endearing image that warms hearts and embodies the best impressions of “community.”

But at Mesquite’s new Regional Park located off Falcon Ridge Parkway, that’s all you can do.

Imagine.

That’s because the city has made the park a “No Kids Zone.”

Reports first started floating in last month that no one was allowed to play in the park without express permission from the city.

At a recent HOA meeting, a resident brought up the fact that their child was forced to leave the park by the Mesquite Police Department.

Since then, others have reported that the police have chased kids out of the park who were playing soccer during the day.

It turns out that the City of Mesquite has determined the park to be off-limits for general use by the citizens.

The city has deemed the new park as a “Reservations Only” facility, meaning citizens must apply for permission to use the park, an unlikely event for a couple of nine-year-olds with an old soccer ball.

The result is that the $20 million facility sits empty and unused for much of the year, waiting for officially sanctioned events.

According to an unnamed source within the city, the ruling has come down from the city offices that the police are to keep people off the fields.

In fact, a new set of iron gates has been erected across the park entrance to help keep people out.

This decision is the latest insult to the community regarding a park that was actually created not for the people, but as the venue for a national corporation which sponsors Long Drive competitions.

The city was able to wheedle major dollars out of the county toward the cost of the facility, under the auspices of creating five soccer fields.

However, it appears the soccer fields were actually a ruse to secure funding toward the annual ReMax Long Drivers of America competition which is featured each Christmas on ESPN.

The Long Drivers of America receives large corporate sponsorships in order to host the championship each year.

The event was held for the first time at the new facility in 2008.

The competition brings plenty of positive attention to the city, including heavy television coverage on the sports channel.

But it’s unusual for a town the size of Mesquite to put up public dollars to create a showplace for a corporate-driven venue.

Fortunately, the facility has also been used recently for not-for-profit events as well.

In November, it was the host site for the Nevada 3A High School State Soccer Championships.

So the facility is certainly drawing attention and use from out-of-towners.

However, with local kids forbidden to use the fields without the government’s permission, it calls into question why public funds were used to build soccer fields that are not open to the public.

Not only children enjoy the new Reginal Park. Until the road was blocked we used the park as a place to just walk around and enjoy the outdoors. Everytime we visited the park we would find other people there walking, running or just showing off to visiting relatives. What is wrong with our City Government? Parks are made to be enjoyed by all, not just by out of towners. If the city has to pay for security to watch the park, okay, but don't deny its citizen entry.

Recently when my family was in Mesquite, where we have a second home and pay taxes, we were shocked the road to the park was closed. Yet we had heard so much about the park ,curiosity got the best of us. We scooted around the road closed sign and drove up and were very impressed. But we commented how can such a nice facility just sit empty. Don't the Mesquite residents know its here? But as we left and drove around the barricade we got a stern look from a passing police officer. Now we know why. A pity we pay over two thousand a year in property taxes to Mesquite and a taxpayer funded facility like this sits empty so much of the year. And government officials wonder why taxpayers gripe. It's not only the Washington bailout that steams taxpayers, but actions like these in Mesquite. It goes to show you don't have to travel across the country to be a lawmaker to be out of touch with constituents.

Ooooooooow!! Does that mean we dogs can't crap in the park too? I love the artificial turf it feels good when I wipe. Arf, arf!! Seriously, you can't trust a politician, because they think that they're either King or Queen and just like this new Federal Govt, this local government is the same WASTEFUL bunch of CLOWNS. I vote that NO incumbuent be reelected no matter what, since they've already lied about this park. Quoting Queenie Suzie, This park is also for the local residents. Look it up here, cause I used it to pick up some poo after I read it, cause I knew it was a lie from the start.

Mesquite has so much potential, but it in inconceivable actions by the city government that has retarded Mesquite. I would add the ridiculous building requirements that prevent small business from opening to the unfriendly family atmosphere described in this article. Mesquite is preventing itself from being the great family location that is has the potential to be. I also have a second home in Mesquite for which I pay taxes and expect access to all public parks. It is exclusively the stupidity of Bubba, Sue and the other elected clowns that make me regret ever buying anything in Mesquite. I am sure I am not the only out of town owner that feels this way, and unfortunately Mesquite loves outsider money, but hates outsider influence. Screw you city counsel!

Don't be shocked when someone vents their frustration of not being able to use that regional park and lights that turf on fire. Then our city government will hike our taxes to make the repairs and continue to tell us, Mesquite Citizens, that we can't use the park. Can't wait for the next election!

Horrendous!!! Time is near for the taxpaying citizens of Mesquite to make a clean sweep of this council and Mayor. This must be one of city attorneys Cheryl Truman Hunt's interpretations of the law as she "understands" (or does not) it. Deplorable!! Just as bad as her ignorance when it comes to the abuse of alcohol at city recreation department sponsered adult league games. Truely as shameful as the Honorable Mayor Holecheck having no authority over the police department, she is just a figurehead in this city government. Time for the taxpayers to take charge of this council and other city administrators and elect someone that represents the taxpayer and not council members with their own viewpoints and agendas.

This story almost feels like it is made-up it is so unbelivable! I wish this story would be picked up by a national news outlet to show how stupid and arrogant the "powers-that-be" are in the city of Mesquite.

The Mesquite citizens elected the City Council and we can get rid of them the same way. However, the Council hired the City Manager and he was responible for the park's "restrictive use". Fire him!

Why do you people even vote, it doesn't matter. If it's political....you will lose. Do you see anybody new running? Nope. Same old folks. And the same OLD folks are the ones who out number the rest of us in this town, so......your vote will get lost and we will all lose again. It happens in every city in the nation. Everybody voted for Bush twice......and everybody banned the Dixie Chicks? Go figure. No matter who you vote for.....it will be wrong.

Time to vote them out of office!!! I have never seen such an ignorant bunch of people in my life. Get Mayor Bill back and maybe this city will grow to its potential, not decline!

What a crock of crap. And Pat, you couldn't be more wrong. Mayor Bill had everyone from the local police to the FBI looking into his ethics and practices... Mayor Holchek needs to go as well, but at least it's not to that point yet. How sad, that we justify our elected officials by "it's not that bad yet", instead of "what a great mayor we have"... Anyone who listens to ANYONE on the council during council meetings, would be embarrassed of the whole group. No town should have to endure this much brazen disregard for the people who elected them. Is the reason they are closing the park because they are short on money? How about sue the city council for the millions of dollars they have squandered on false projects, promised jobs, feasibility studies and the like, and open our public lands back to the people who PAID FOR THEM!

Morris, a great article! Too bad the article is truth and not an April Fool's joke. Of course, our continuing April Fool's joke are our elected officials and the top appointed bureaucrats! Well, BLM, the County and our State elected officials will be receiving a copy of this for their info. Shame, shame on our city government.

Definition of a PARK from Merriam-Webster dictionary: A piece of ground in or near a city or town kept for ornament and recreation, an area maintained in its natural state as a public property Just in case that one was too hard to understand I went online to Answer.com and they use this as their Definition of PARK: 1. An area of land set aside for public use, as: a. A piece of land with few or no buildings within or adjoining a town, maintained for recreational and ornamental purposes. b. A landscaped city square. c. A large tract of rural land kept in its natural state and usually reserved for the enjoyment and recreation of visitors. Let see, Mesquite Residents pay taxes for it… But, OUR PUBLIC PARK can not be use unless we ask first, as the posting on the Mesquite City web page states dated as of January 27, 2009? And now to make sure Residents fully understand We are not to use the Mesquite Regional Park, our City Government is building a gate across the road leading to the Mesquite Regional Park… Maybe we just need to change the name from Mesquite Regional Park to Long Drive Citizens of Mesquite Subsidized Simi Open Park, this would eliminate the bewilderment many of us in town seem to be having with the part of PUBLIC USE that our City Government understand… Or is it just maybe because our City Government is suffering with that illness that so many seem to have these days… Cranial Rectal Insertion? I just don’t know any more.

What a waste of tax payer money! I am furious that my tax money paid for a facility neither my children or I can use at leisure. Just when I thought Mesquite couldn't be any worse of a place for children to live, the city officials any more dense, I am proven wrong. Seems it is time for a change of city government officials!
