Brian Dangerfield has returned to his roots – athletic promotion and management. .
Dangerfield became the director of the Mesquite Department of Athletics and Leisure Services on Jan. 3, replacing Rich Bohne, who accepted another job out of state. He’s been better known the past three years as the city’s, at times, controversial Economic Development Director.
“It’s always good to be an economic development director when the economy is good,” Dangerfield told the MLN in a lengthy interview before assuming the new post. “You’d be hard pressed to find a period of time on this planet when markets have been more hindered than they are now: home prices have gone down and net worth… can you retire now? All this uncertainty has made it difficult to do the job.”
Dangerfield’s associate in the department, Aaron Baker, now will take on that role while the city council decides if it would prefer for the function to be assumed by a private or public-private entity.
When Dangerfield moved to Mesquite in late January 2008 he replaced Bill Chernock, who had accepted a job with the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce. Dangerfield was working in a similar role in Ceder City, Utah, but he knew Chernock well.
“Mesquite, St. George, Cedar City – we’re all kind of in the same area, between two metropolitan areas and can easily be overlooked, but there are a lot of things happening in our region. I’d come down and meet with him occasionally,” Dangerfield said.

Mayor: Mesquite economy ‘not out of the storm’
Posting Date: 01-25-2012

By Kent Harper
“We are not out of the storm,” Mayor Mark Wier said Tuesday about the local economy during his state of the city address.

But a possible “storm” about the proposed indoor sports center, also included on the Jan. 24 Mesquite City Council agenda, failed to break. The council was to review proposals for two to four design teams for the project and possibly move forward or reject continuing it.

Wier, however, began the meeting by announcing that the item would not be discussed that evening, but would be on the agenda for the next council meeting on Feb. 14.

During the public comment period at the end of the meeting, City Attorney Cheryl Hunt explained that staff recommended tabling the issue because it still was gathering additional information.

“This is a good thing,” she assured the audience.

Wier discussed several other “good things” during his address.

The west side of Falcon Ridge Parkway has been shut down at Pioneer.
Posting Date: 01-24-2012

With the closure of Falcon Ridge due to the bridge demo and slide this week, the Police Dept. has observed a safety issue with motorists entering the SB I-15 South Bound on-ramp, driving down a half mile and then crossing the median to get on the North Bound lanes. Kurt Sawyer, Interim City Manager, met with Police Chief Tanner, Alan Preston (WW Clyde), and Tom Stevenson (NDOT) to discuss the problem. It was determined that it was in the best interest of the motoring public to shut down the SB I-15 On-Ramp during the bridge slide.

Therefore, the west side of Falcon Ridge has been shut down at Pioneer to prevent entrance onto SB I-15. Motorists are directed to use Exit 122 for access to I-15. Once the bridge slide is completed and Falcon Ridge is reopened Exit 122 will also open.

Dawn over Leon, Mex., and the site of the largest
balloon event in Latin America.

A strong contingent of hot air balloonists from Northern Utah will venture to the inaugural Mesquite Hot Air Balloon Festival Jan. 28-29.

“This is my sixth year of ballooning,” said Dan Montgomery, a resident of West Jordan, Utah and a 54 year-old mechanic with Pep Boys. “I have been to Mesquite several times, but none of us have ever flown a balloon there.

“We’re all looking forward to it. This is going to be very neat.”

The friendly Montgomery said hot air ballooning is definitely one of those things that everyone needs to do at least once. After the first flight, the person is usually hooked.

“There is no feeling like it,” said Montgomery. “You really are lighter than air and you float like a cloud. If you think back to when you were kids and how you liked to lie on your back to watch the clouds go by, that’s the way it is in a balloon. It’s much different than a fixed wing airplane or a helicopter because it’s so quiet.

Despite a 1-16 record coming into Friday night’s basketball game against the host Virgin Valley High School Bulldogs, the Moapa Valley High School Pirates sunk the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, winning 48-45. It was a typical ‘Dawg and Pirate showdown of archrivals pitting two teams where records don’t mean much. The gym was full of raucous Bulldog and Pirate fans. Moapa made the first point of the game on a free throw. The Bulldogs scored on a smooth feed from Dee Bowler to Dillon Graves who hit for two plus a free throw to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the game at 3-1. It was uncontrolled basketball the rest of the first quarter of play, as each team could not buy a basket. The ‘Dawgs nemesis, missed free throws and raised its ugly head as the Bulldogs could only manage a 12-11 lead after the first period. Bulldog forward Nolan Tanner began the second period of play with a long three moving the ‘Dawgs lead to 15-11. Three and a half minutes later the score remained the same as the Pirates packed their zone defense around the paint.  [Read full story]

When Fred Toval spoke before the city council last week he said “unsubstantiated fallacies” pose a major obstacle blocking a smoke-free, indoor environment in Mesquite.

Toval is the Mesquite representative for the American Lung Association who has been spearheading the drive to create a smoke-free Mesquite.

Because of all the false claims about the economic harm creating legislation to ban cigarettes from Mesquite’s businesses and casinos, Toval presented data that showed community support for the city council to ban the practice.

Toval wasn’t alone. Dozens of Mesquite residents crowded the Mesquite City Council chamber Tuesday night to show their support for the Smoke-Free Mesquite drive and for making Mesquite Nevada’s first smoke-free destination.

“We have an opportunity to set ourselves apart as a city,” Toval told the council, “while at the same time providing healthier work environments for hundreds of Mesquite citizens.”

Money to buy water shares dries up at VVWD
Posting Date: 01-19-2012

By Susan Santarcangelo

Still minus its fifth member, the Virgin Valley Water District Board of Directors decided Tuesday it lacked the funds to buy additional water-right shares.

Kenneth R. Cowart wanted to sell the district from 1 to 3¼ shares in the Mesquite Irrigation Company (MIC). He offered the river-water shares at $70,000 each.

Ken Rock, the district’s general manager, provided the board with a breakdown of costs for purchasing water rights over the last two decades. The costs ranged from a high of $65,000 and $71,423 a share between 2008 and 2010 to as little as $6,000 a share in December of 1996.

The directors generally agreed that they would like to purchase the river water, but that the market no longer supported a $70,000 per share price. They also agreed that there was no money in the existing budget to purchase additional rights.

Ultimately, the board directed Rock to tell Cowart or any others wanting to sell their shares that the district had no desire to buy additional water rights at this time.

It was the board’s second meeting of the new year, and lingering business still went undone. Richard Bowler was to be sworn as the new director representing Bunkerville. But that appointment must be made by the Clark County Commission. Once the commission acts, Bowler will take his seat on the board.

The remainder of the meeting focused on consideration and approval of activities for the maintenance of the existing facilities.

Volunteers are needed for the Mesquite Hot Air Balloon Festival
Jan. 28-29.

The Mesquite Hot Air Balloon Festival slated Jan. 28-29 is offering unique opportunities for volunteers who work the event.

“We need as many as we can get,” said balloonmeister Gayle McCoy, an Elko, Nev. resident who has been spearheading hot air balloon events for about 32 years.”

McCoy went on to say that volunteers are needed to help set up the balloons before the event and also after the event has been concluded.

“You get to help put up and take down one of the most beautiful things in the world,” said McCoy, 50, who has lived in Elko for 22 years. “This is a thrill beyond belief. In fact, some of the volunteers might be able to get the chance to fly – and I assure you that if that becomes the case, the thrill will be even bigger.”
